Project report
Light that becomes part of architecture
The canteen at the Garching research campus combines clear architecture with digital communication. For the food control system, an individually playable LED advertising wall was created, presenting information, colours and moving content widely visible. The lighting design comes from Matthias Singer and his studio 507 Nanometer and Fantomas Munich, which develop light installations at the interface of art, design and architecture. Alurays supplied the LED wall manufactured for this project. Their special feature lies in the installation in the covered outdoor area: The robust design in protection class IP66 reliably protects the technology against dust, moisture and strong beam water. Modular RGBW pixels enable homogeneous light points, dynamic color gradients and flexibly programmable motifs. At the same time, the construction remains flat and precisely integrates into the architecture of the canteen. Thus, the advertising wall becomes not only a functional information carrier, but a living part of the building. The interplay of design, control and weatherproof special production creates a distinctive visual prelude for thousands of students, employees and guests of the Technical University of Munich every day.
